Evaluation four - who would be the audience for your media product?
Our audience for our film would be 20+ but mainly 20-40. This age range is mainly due to the sub-genre and the need for thought into plot. (see more at "Audience Profile" For full answer)
Evaluation five - How did you attract/address your audience?
In the film, we leave most of the narrative to be thought out by the audience, this means the audience must be that who enjoy thinking about that narrative and conclude themselves. This is an older audience. We saw that most psychological thrillers are aimed at this age range. A lot of crime thrillers are also aimed at this group as they most enjoy a mystery. By adding a thought factor, we remove the attraction to the younger audiences, who generally prefer an obvious narrative with explicit language and violence.
In addition, the film is independent and alternative. It offers a different preconception of the characters we represent. Children are often seen as vulnerable and innocent, we use these dominant ideologues to confuse the audience as we display our characters in a different light. For example, Joel is represented as innocent through our use of high angle and over the shoulder camera shots, soft lighting and the activities he is doing, yet his actions perceive him as villainous. This makes him seem strange in his surroundings and contributes to the whole atmosphere of the film.
This use of children may also be inaccessible to a younger audience.
To attract our audience, we used a high quality camera, in contrast to the shaky film camera used for teen thrillers, to make the film seem more professional for an older audience.
Our audience would be attracted to the film through tv adverts and non-digital media. We decided this would be the best use of advertising as we could directly aim our adverts to channels that our audience watches (for example channel 4, film 4, bbc 1 e.c.t).
This is an example of an opening/advert similar to what we want to achieve:
