Based on the opening thriller clips we analyzed last week, we decided to go for a psychological thriller. But we realized that most of those in this genre weren't particularly scary and action filled (they normally started with an ideal setting where something would go wrong later, or in some cases a preview in a dance ect which would be a slight synopsis of what would happen in the film). We thought this would be inappropriate, because we were only doing the beginning of a film, not the whole, so the audience wouldn't see the 'thriller' aspect in the short 5 minutes.
After discussion, we decided to show a character engrossed in a project. It is obvious in the first minutes that this character is slightly delusional and obsessive. And in this opening scene, we would introduce a world where he has created characters and told stories through pictures in which the characters could not escape.
We started with writing scripts and decided there should be minimal dialogue, which would only be narrated (played over the movie like a story is being told). We thought this would be effective as the character is somewhat writing stories in the movie and this would create a thought for the audience. But we were having difficulties on what the narrator should say.
We then turned to music for inspiration. We saw that each opening would use music to create a certain atmosphere. In this opening, we wanted to create an opposite effect by putting calm music with an uneasy clip. The music we chose helped with our inspiration for dialogue.
We wanted the narrator to say, at the very start of the clip (to provoke thought and an edgy atmosphere):
"You'd think that these day's you couldn't get lost. But you can." With a pause and then:
"It's hard to get lost in a wood with no trees"
Our dialogue motivated thought into our storyboard and we had some ideas about camera shots and plot (continue to 'storyboard')
