Fringe - 2008 TV series
Fringe is a TV series following a female FBI agent who undergoes a series of investigations using forensic science. This is mainly a TV drama / crime thriller.
The opening credits start with a plane emerging out of thunder. This gives connotations of danger to come. This pathetic fallacy prepares the audience for a thriller movie and excites their expectations of this genre. Emotive piano music is played over this as it is faded in and, as if this thunder had started a chain reaction of trouble, the music intensifies as the clip caries on. The pictures of hairs and solution splashes connotes the science involved in the drama and hints at the specific genre of the programme.
The font however is not conventional for the thriller genre. This simple font, in white, is dull compared to a conventional font that would perhaps drip with blood or use a fade transition to show a paranormal quality. This however suggests that this programme is perhaps for a older target audience as it gives a more professional, rather than a 'special effect', look.

Pretty Little Liars - 2010 TV series
Pretty little liars is a drama / crime thriller about four girls who have committed a crime.
The introduction starts off with a girl, getting ready for something; her nails, hair and makeup are being done. Then, it’s revealed that she is in a casket, obviously letting the viewer know that she is apparently getting ready for her death. Four other girls, dressed in black, stand behind the casket looking anxiously, and nervously at it. Focusing on one of the girls, it ends with the girl placing her finger in front of her lips, as if to express secrecy. The lighting in intro is low and dim which gives a sense of mischievous events. The edges of the screen are tinted black, which gives the opening a strange dream-like vibe.
The intro’s theme song is the song Secret by The Pierces, which also adds to the meaning of the whole content as it ends on "Two can keep a secret if one of them is dead" which also relates to the genre.
This font is also not conventional for a thriller programme as it is written in Calligraphy which connotes innocence and an upper class status, contrasting with the picture seen of an obvious murder. This gives the audience a suggestion on the storyline of the programme but also the type of genre.
